Alfie Design Creates Custom Watercolor Invitations for Ultimate Skybox Wedding

By, July 02, 2012

An invitation is an extension of the wedding decor – it sets the tone for the celebration, and gives guests a quick preview of what the day will entail. At Alfie Design, I specialize in custom watercolor wedding invitations. Every invitation suite that I create is customized to the couple, and to the overall feel of their big day! Whether the wedding theme is vintage chic, backyard barbecue, traditional, or old Hollywood glam, the opportunities are endless when using a medium like watercolor.

I recently had the opportunity to work with a beautiful couple, Kate and Matt.  Their wedding was a combination of classic and contemporary. The ceremony was held at Our Lady of the Rosary, followed by an urban reception at the Ultimate Skybox in the Gaslamp.

When we first discussed the invitations, they envisioned a clean modern feel with a light and intricate design. I used a fine art, soft cotton paper for the invites to provide a sturdy and high quality look.

The wedding color scheme consisted of shades of coral, grey and white. These cool shades worked nicely with the church’s classic appeal. The same colors also paired nicely with the reception venue’s contemporary floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking downtown San Diego.

We decided to keep the suite simple and modern by producing the pieces without mattes, which allowed for double sided cards. This approach is also more cost effective and eco-friendly!  In addition to the announcement, we created a customized map, and an RSVP postcard in shades of shades of coral and white. We then paired the whole suite with a slate-colored envelope!

I always like to make a my invitation suites a complete package by adding a final accent. Whether it’s twine, a band, or a pocket fold with a wax seal, I enjoy finishing with a distinctive touch. For this invite, we used a pale peach twine, which complemented the clean and understated feel of the wedding.  For each suite, I used just over a yard of twine! Once the twine was hand-wrapped around the stack of cards three times, the package was tied together with a knot.

To further enhance the theme, we created simple escort cards with the coral tone watercolor wash. Also, we made table numbers using the floral design from the invitations. Everything at the wedding paired together beautifully!

Other designs, such as the program and menu shown here, shared the same intricate floral pieces and watercolor wash used in the invitations.

Kate and Matt were so great to work with!  Their personalities were bubbly, easy going and playful – just like their signature “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” cocktails!  To highlight the drink of the night, I created a sign featuring a watercolor-painted champagne glass!

Amazing Race Winners Throw First Pitch at Padres Game

By, September 28, 2011

In the past two years, I have traveled around the world on the Emmy-winning reality show The Amazing Race, gotten engaged, hired the best wedding photographers in San Diego (True Photography), joined the True team, and married my best friend.  It’s been quite an adventure, and it’s not going to stop any time soon!

Ever since The Amazing Race, we’ve gotten so many great opportunities in the community we grew up in, including the honor of throwing out the first pitch at the Padres game this past Monday night!  We even hung out in the press box with Hall of Fame legend Tony Gwynn and Padres commentator Mark Grant.  Being a huge baseball fan, Aaron Feldman, founder of True Photography, was there to photograph the exciting event.  Having Aaron catch the play-by-play with his camera was like a post-wedding shoot at Petco Park, right across the street from where our wedding was photographed at the Hard Rock Hotel earlier this year.

For all the brides out there, I’m here to tell you – life keeps getting better after marriage. There is no one else I would rather share my adventures with!  We’re so glad that True Photography was there to capture the occasion, and of course, to be a part of such an exciting night.

Sporty couple takes the field for Petco Park engagement shoot

By, July 26, 2011

For Jamie and Ben’s engagement shoot, we headed down to Petco Park in downtown San Diego. Since we had access to the field, we were able to photograph them being silly in the bullpen, sitting alone in the stands, holding hands in the dugout, and stepping up to bat at home plate! We also found a few brightly colored and textured walls, which provided great backgrounds for their photos.

This incredibly photogenic couple is getting married on May 27, 2012 in San Diego. They even wore to customized Padres shirts during the shoot so we could take a picture to be included in their Save the Dates. Check out the results below, and let us know what you think!
